Santa Fe Passes Civil Liberties Resolution!!

The Santa Fe City Council passed the Resolution In Support of the Bill of Rights and Ci vil Liberties for Santa Feans late Wednesday night in a 7-1 vote. Despite the late hour, fifteen or more people, including Executive Director of the New Mexico ACLU Peter Simonson, spoke in favor of the Resolution, while no one except City Councilor David Pfeffer spoke against it. Pfeffer said that it was not the place of the council to address national issues.

Councilors Bushee, Coss, and Heldmeyer joined initial Resolution sponsors Matt Ortiz and Miguel Chavez in sponsoring the resolution, and Councilors Lopez and Wurzburger helped to pass it.

Councilor Ortiz stressed the positive action the Resolution would engender, including the opening of public dialog between citizens, elected officials, and law enforcement on issues of civil liberties and security.

"The rights of all men are diminshed if the rights of any man are denied."
      -John F. Kennedy

Real patriotism defends and supports not just the symbols, but the founding principles our forefathers fought and died for: those rights granted by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. To remove these freedoms can only lead us away from democracy and our foundations as a nation of liberty and justice sworn to protect the rights of all.

....a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles...is absolutely necessary to preserve the blessings of liberty and keep a government free.
       Ben Franklin
